News Round Up: June 4, 2018

Here are some highlights from the past week’s news on family tax credit issues:

Top Story: The Louisiana Senate approved a $540 million tax package Sunday that includes an expansion of the state’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) from 3.5 to 5 percent of the federal credit. The House version of the package does not include an expanded EITC, but both chambers are expected to negotiate a deal before the session ends today. (The Times-Picayune)

  • Elected officials in Harrison Township, Pennsylvania, approved a municipal-level EITC worth up to $300 for volunteer firefighters. Buffalo Township, also in Pennsylvania, is considering a similar credit for volunteer first responders. (Valley News Dispatch 1, 2)
  • The first declared candidate for president in 2020, Representative John Delaney (D-Md.), is campaigning on a “bipartisan call to action” that includes expanding the federal EITC. (The Washington Post)
